Rep. Mike Kelly Joins Western Pennsylvania Leaders to Discuss How Global Engagement Benefits the Region

Erie, PA — Bringing together leaders from across Western Pennsylvania to discuss America’s role in the world, the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) hosted Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA-16), Lt. General Christopher F. Burne, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), and community leaders for “America and the World: How Western Pennsylvania Wins“—a discussion on how America’s international engagement through development and diplomacy, alongside defense, directly protects Pennsylvania’s security and prosperity.

Pennsylvania’s economy is deeply connected to global markets, generating $79 billion in exports annually and supporting over 1.6 million jobs—20% of all employment statewide. The discussion examined how strategic international assistance opens new markets, strengthens trading relationships, and supports the global stability that Pennsylvania’s export economy depends on—reinforcing USGLC’s findings from the new Economic Security is National Security report.

Representative Mike Kelly emphasized how America’s global leadership benefits Western Pennsylvania: “America’s global leadership matters deeply to Western Pennsylvania families. When we’re engaged around the world, it creates the conditions our local businesses need to succeed internationally. Strong American leadership abroad means more opportunities, better jobs, and greater prosperity right here at home.”

Lt. General Christopher F. Burne highlighted the strategic importance of sustained international engagement: “Global instability impacts our national and economic security. American strength and presence builds relationships and promotes stability, but America’s standing and influence requires more than a strong military. I’ve seen firsthand the power of diplomacy and development in strengthening our national security, building strategic partnerships abroad, and addressing threats at their source, rather than responding to crises after they emerge.”

“Smart and strategic investments in international assistance are a win-win for Western Pennsylvania,” said USGLC Deputy Outreach Director, Emily Tavino, “When America strategically engages the world through development and diplomacy, we forge the strategic partnerships and open markets that Pennsylvania businesses need to thrive.”
