Sylvia Mathews Burwell an Outstanding Choice to Meet Fiscal Challenges

Washington, DC —The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition released this statement from Executive Director Liz Schrayer on the confirmation of Sylvia Mathews Burwell as Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB):

“As we work to meet the fiscal challenges before us, Sylvia Mathews Burwell is an outstanding choice to navigate this difficult budget environment and continue the smart power agenda.  As a veteran of OMB, the Treasury Department, and global development, she has been a true champion of U.S. global engagement, and brings extensive knowledge on ways the private sector can complement the work of the government.  We have seen her talent and passion for effective development over years of collaborating, both at the Gates Foundation and at Walmart.  As she recently said, ‘What most Americans don’t realize is that less than one percent of the federal budget is allocated to development programs. And that these programs now are smarter and better than in the past. As we struggle with budgets and priorities, looking for the right investments becomes even more important.’

“We congratulate Ms. Burwell on her confirmation and look forward to working with her in promoting America’s global leadership.”
