National Security Advisory Council

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition’s National Security Advisory Council (NSAC) includes nearly 150 retired three and four-star generals and admirals, representing all five branches of the Armed Forces, united in support of advancing America’s national security by strengthening all the tools of national security — diplomacy and development, alongside a strong defense.  NSAC was founded by Admiral Leighton Smith, USN (Ret.) and General Anthony Zinni, USMC (Ret.) in March of 2008.

Co-chaired by Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.) and General Anthony Zinni, USMC (Ret.), NSAC members are active and trusted voices in engaging Congress, the media, and state and community leaders on the need for a “smart power” approach to combat today’s global threats with adequate resources for the International Affairs Budget. In 2012 over 80 members of NSAC signed a letter to Members of Congress expressing their support for a strong and effective International Affairs Budget.

Testifying before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State-Foreign Operations in March 2013, Admiral James L. Loy, USCG (Ret) explained NSAC’s work by saying, “We do so out of the conviction that military strength is not sufficient to defend America’s security, protect our most vital national interests, and, in particular, address the deep-rooted causes of violence and instability around the world.  To deal with these threats, the U.S. must fully utilize all three aspects of national power and international influence—defense, diplomacy, and development.”

NSAC continues to be a growing and vital part of the USGLC’s broad coalition that seeks to ensure America’s global leadership and build a better, safer world.

The Latest: In March, Admiral Loy and General Michael Hagee, USMC (Ret.), former co-chairs of the National Security Advisory Council, testified before the House State-Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee in support of the international affairs budget request. Read the Testimony
