WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) President and CEO, Liz Schrayer, released the following statement after the Administration sent a rescission package targeting multiple government departments, including billions in global health and humanitarian funding, to Congress:
For four years the Administration has played games with our national security when it comes to American aid programs, and it appears they’re at it again with an 11th hour rescission attempt. I am 100% certain that a strong bipartisan chorus in Congress will not even take it seriously.
It’s particularly troubling and entirely out of touch with reality that OMB is choosing yet another losing fight on American aid in the midst of a global pandemic, targeting the global health and humanitarian programs like GAVI, McGovern-Dole child nutrition program, and PEPFAR that are literally saving lives around the world and protecting America’s own health security.
Time and again, Congress has consistently rejected any “doctrine of retreat.” As disease and hunger skyrocket and our own exports plummet, the growing global challenges remind us every day that our domestic recovery is tied with what happens around the world.
