Hagel Nomination Continues Administration’s Commitment to Smart Power

Nominee Strong Voice for Strengthening Civilian Capacity

Washington, DC —The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition released this statement from Chairman Dan Glickman and Executive Director Liz Schrayer on President Obama’s nomination for Secretary of Defense:

“Senator Chuck Hagel is a longtime friend and leader in supporting the International Affairs Budget and strengthening the role of development and diplomacy in U.S. foreign policy.  This is particularly critical at a time when our civilian forces are asked to do more in addressing global security challenges throughout the world.

“Throughout his tenure in the Senate and as a member of the USGLC’s Advisory Council, Senator Hagel has been a consistent voice for ensuring strong and effective resources for our State Department, USAID, and other civilian agencies.  This is clearly a nod to the importance of a strong partnership between our military and civilian agencies, forged between Secretaries Clinton and Gates, and essential for a continued smart power approach to U.S. foreign policy.”
