Ambassador Peter Michael McKinley was appointed as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in May 2018 after serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil from 2017 to 2018. A career foreign service officer, Michael McKinley has served in a variety of senior State Department positions, including Ambassador to Brazil (2017-2018), Ambassador to Afghanistan (2014-2016), Deputy U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan (2013-2014), Ambassador to Colombia (2010-2013), Ambassador to Peru (2007-2010), and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration (2001-2004). Ambassador McKinley has also served as Deputy Chief of Mission and Charge d’ Affaires at the U.S. Mission to the European Union and U.S. embassies in Uganda, Mozambique, and Belgium.
In his current position, McKinley plays an important role in keeping Secretary Pompeo connected to the State Department’s career service. During his long career in public service, Ambassador McKinley has worked to uphold many of USGLC’s top priorities. After the 2007 earthquake in Peru, he helped coordinate disaster relief for those affected and cemented America’s leading role in the response. And in Afghanistan, he helped with reconstruction amid continued violence, focusing on the expansion of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
Ambassador McKinley joined the Foreign Service in 1982 directly after graduating from college. He was born in Venezuela and grew up in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and the United States. McKinley completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in the United Kingdom and received his doctorate from Oxford University. McKinley speaks Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
