Foreign trade supports nearly 60,000 jobs in Wyoming. Wyoming’s chemical manufacturing exports are in increasing demand across the world, especially in emerging markets such as Brazil, Chile, and China.

Job Creation

  • Trade supported 75,700 jobs in Wyoming in 2008, or 18.7 % of total jobs, up from 11.9 % in 1992.1
  • Almost one-tenth (9.9%) of all manufacturing workers in Wyoming depended on exports for their jobs.2
  • In 2008, 10,600 people in Wyoming were employed by U.S. affiliates of companies that are at least 50% foreign-owned.3

Exports and Growth

  • Wyoming exported $926 million in merchandise to 99 foreign markets in 2009, up 38 % since 2005. Wyoming’s largest market in 2009 was Canada ($229 million), followed by Brazil ($80 million), Mexico ($74 million), Japan ($47 million), and Indonesia ($45 million).4
  • In 2008, 361 companies exported goods from Wyoming. Of these, 75% were small- and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.
  • Agricultural exports are important to Wyoming’s economy, totaling $114 million in 2008.5
  • Since 2007, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed $0.41 million in exports from 2 companies in 2 communities in Wyoming.6

Education and Research

  • During the 2008–2009 academic year, 256 Wyoming students studied abroad.7
  • In 2009–2010, 1,010 international students were enrolled in Wyoming colleges and universities, up 13.5% from the previous year, and contributed $18.8 million to the Wyoming economy.8

Global Engagement

  • Since 1961, 471 Peace Corps volunteers from Wyoming have served in dozens of countries overseas.9
