Job Creation

  • Trade supported 91,600 jobs in Vermont in 2008, or 21.1% of total jobs, up from 10.5% in 1992.1
  • Over one-quarter (28.8%) of all manufacturing workers in Vermont depended on exports for their jobs.2
  • In 2008, 10,500 people in Vermont were employed by U.S. affiliates of companies that are at least 50% foreign-owned.3

Exports and Growth

  • Vermont exported $3.2 billion in merchandise to 10,045 foreign markets in 2009. Vermont’s largest market in 2009 was Canada ($1.5 billion), followed by Hong Kong ($258 billion), China ($221 million), Malaysia ($184 million), and Japan ($181 million).4 
  • In 2008, 976 companies exported goods from Vermont. Of these, 89% were small- and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.
  • Agricultural exports are important to New England’s economy, totaling $711 million and supporting about 8,235 jobs in 2008.5
  • Since 2007, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed $9 million in exports from 8 companies in 5 communities in Vermont.6

Education and Research

  • In 2008–2009, 1,942 Vermont students studied abroad, a 5.7% increase over the previous academic year.7
  • During 2009–2010, 1,017 international students were enrolled in Vermont colleges and universities and contributed $34.1 million to the Vermont economy.8

Global Engagement

  • Since 1961, 1,351 Peace Corps volunteers from Vermont have served in dozens of countries overseas.9
  • Support from U.S. government grants and contracts to private voluntary organizations engaged in foreign assistance and development in Vermont totaled over $66 million in 2008.10
