Utah

Utah is the only state to double its exports between 2005 and 2010, helping to keep the state’s
economy strong through the economic downturn. 93,000 manufacturing jobs depend on
exports, and nearly 2,500 companies across the state do business worldwide.

Job Creation

Trade supported 358,400 jobs in Utah in 2008, or 21.2% of total jobs, up from 10.5% in 1992. ¹
Over one-seventh (15.1%) of all manufacturing workers in Utah depended on exports for their jobs.²
In 2008, 32,500 people in Utah were employed by U.S. affiliates of companies that are at least 50% foreign-owned. ³

Exports and Growth

Utah exported $10.3 billion in merchandise to more than 80
foreign markets in 2009 (a 70% increase over 2005). Utah’s largest
market in 2009 was the United Kingdom ($4.4 billion), followed by
Canada ($1.0 billion), India ($650 million), Taiwan ($568 million),
and China ($542 million).⁴
In 2008, 2,625 companies exported goods from Utah. Of these, 86% were small- and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.

Agricultural exports are important to Utah’s statewide economy, totaling $448 million in 2008.⁵
Since 2007, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed $84.4 million
in exports from 23 companies in 10 communities in Utah.⁶

Education and Research

During the 2008–2009 academic year, 3,070 Utah students studied abroad, a 18.2% increase over the previous academic year.⁷
In 2009–2010, 7,562 international students were enrolled in Utah colleges and universities and contributed $145.5 million to the Utah economy.⁸

Global Engagement

Since 1961, 944 Peace Corps volunteers from Utah have served in dozens of countries overseas.⁹
