New York is the third largest exporter of goods in the country, supporting an estimated 293,000 jobs to the state in 2008. Exports come from a diverse array of goods, including manufactured products, electronics, and transportation equipment. From bountiful farms and productive mining upstate, to the world-class service exports of New York City, New York exports are always in high demand

Job Creation

  • Trade supported 2.5 million jobs in New York in 2008, or 22.2% of total jobs, up from 10.4% in 1992.1
  • More than one-fifth (20.9%) of all manufacturing workers in New York depended on exports for their jobs.2
  • In 2008, 417,000 people in New York were employed by U.S. affiliates of companies that are at least 50% foreign-owned.3

Exports and Growth

  • New York exported $58.7 billion in merchandise to more than 190 foreign markets in 2009. New York’s largest market in 2009 was Canada ($12.6 billion), followed by the United Kingdom ($4.5 billion), Israel ($3.7 billion), Switzerland ($3.3 billion), and Hong Kong ($3.0 billion).4
  • In 2008, 28,930 companies exported goods from New York. Of these, 94% were small- and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.5
  • Agricultural exports are important to New York’s economy, totaling $1.2 billion and supporting about 13,899 jobs in 2008.6
  • Since 2007, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed $5.1 billion in exports from 206 companies in 84 communities in New York.7

Education and Research

  • In 2008-2009, 21,055 New York students studied abroad.8
  • During 2009-2010, 76,146 international students were enrolled in New York colleges and universities and contributed $2.29 billion to the New York economy.9

Global Engagement

  • Since 1961, 12,017 Peace Corps volunteers from New York have served in dozens of countries overseas.10
  • Support from U.S. government grants and contracts to private voluntary organizations engaged in foreign assistance and development in New York totaled over $700 million in 2008.11
