While Indiana’s transportation and industrial manufacturing have long been profitable exports, its pharmaceuticals exports are increasingly a driver of growth for the state. Overall, exports support nearly 10% of all Indiana private sector jobs.

Job Creation

  • Trade supported 761,500 jobs in Indiana in 2008, or 20.5% of total jobs, up from 10% in 1992. 1
  • Almost one-quarter (23.5%) of all manufacturing workers in Indiana depended on exports for their jobs.2
  • In 2008, 141,600 people in Indiana were employed by U.S. affiliates of companies that are at least 50% foreign-owned.3

Exports and Growth

  • Indiana exported $28.7 billion in merchandise to foreign markets in 2010. Indiana’s largest market in 2010 was Canada ($10.7 billion), followed by Mexico ($2.6 billion), Germany ($1.8 billion), the United Kingdom ($1.5 billion), and France ($1.4 billion).4
  • In 2008, 6,558 companies exported goods from Indiana. Of these, 86% were small- and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 500 employees.
  • Agricultural exports are important to Indiana’s economy, totaling $3.7 billion and supporting about 42,857 jobs in 2008.5
  • Since 2007, the U.S. Export-Import Bank has financed over $846 million in exports from 89 companies in 40 communities in Indiana.6

Education and Research

  • In 2008–2009, 9,049 Indiana students studied abroad, a 0.7% increase over the previous academic year.From 2008–2009, three Indiana institutions sent more than 80% of their students abroad at some point during their undergraduate careers.7
  • During 2009–2010, 18,569 international students were enrolled in Indiana colleges and universities and contributed $513.8 million to the Indiana economy.8

Global Engagement

  • Since 1961, 2,846 Peace Corps volunteers from Indiana have served in dozens of countries overseas.9
