Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation

Tom Countryman, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, rank of Minister-Counselor, serves as Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Non-Proliferation. In this current position, he will advise the Secretary of State and other government officials on policies and programs around the world that will advance U.S. foreign policy goals related Non-Proliferation and International Security. As a Foreign Service Officer, he has served in a variety of roles, including in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, in the State Department’s Office of Counter-Terrorism, as Director of the Office of South Central European Affairs, Minister-Counselor of Political Affairs in Rome, Italy, and most recently, as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
