As Director of Policy Planning, Jake Sullivan oversees what is known as the State Department’s “think tank.” The Policy Planning Staff is responsible for providing the Secretary of State with independent policy analysis and advice. These recommendations are based on long term strategic views of international trends and the advancement of the interests of the United States. Prior to assuming this post in February 2011, Mr. Sullivan had served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy since January 2009. Mr. Sullivan previously served as Chief Counsel and senior policy adviser to Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. As of 7/19/11
