Secretary Clinton yesterday announced the creation of the Pakistan Relief Fund , a fund through which the public can offer donations to the ongoing relief efforts in response to the devastating floods there, a method that proved successful in raising money in Haiti earlier this year. Speaking at the UN Headquarters, Secretary Clinton announced a further $60 million in flood relief, bringing the total US contribution to more than $150 million. “Our civilian helicopters began assisting in relief efforts almost immediately,” she said. “And to date, U.S. aircraft have carried more than 6,000 Pakistanis to safety and distributed more than a million pounds of relief supplies.” USAID has played a vital role in relief efforts, providing millions of dollars in food-vouchers to flood-affected families, reporting on the flood’s path, and offering support for health and water, sanitation, and hygiene activities in flood-affected areas, among other assistance.
