USAID Admin Outlines Plans for Reform
USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah called for “a more efficient, results-oriented agency” on Friday at the National Press Club. He began by noting the success the U.S. has had in responding to February’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. “Together with our partner, the World Food Program, we fed more than 3.5 million people — the largest feeding program ever attempted in an emergency,” he said. Dr. Shah emphasized USAID’s intention to work “where the link between the opportunity to lead a healthy and productive life and our own national security is more acute,” noting its role in the Administration’s global initiatives, Feed the Future and the Global Health Initiative. The international environment is changing, and USAID must change with it, he said. “America’s greatest security challenges are no longer state-based.”
