Making Food Security a Priority at State
As further proof the Administration is making food security a development priority, the State Department is establishing an office to coordinate its Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative next month. Amb. Patricia Haslach, a former assistant chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, will serve as the deputy coordinator for diplomacy, and William Garvelink, U.S. ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, will serve as the deputy coordinator for development for the office. Spending on the President’s Food Security Initiative is $890 million in FY 2010, and the request for FY 2011 is $1.76 billion. It’s expected the Administration will announce that 21 countries will receive the bulk of the funding.
This weekend, make sure you tune in to the Sunday shows as Secretary of State Clinton and Secretary of Defense Gates will be appearing together again on “Meet the Press,” “This Week” and “Face the Nation.”
