“Out of the Spotlight”

By Dan Glickman

Politico; April 2, 2010

As chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, I worked with filmmakers who capture compelling stories and inspire millions of people. I saw powerful films, such as “Hotel Rwanda” and “Blood Diamond,” bring the suffering of displaced people out of the shadows. They remind us all of our shared values.

Now, with refugee crises exploding, I am leaving the Hollywood spotlight to become an advocate for the millions of displaced people. I am returning to my first love, public service, to be president of Refugees International, the leading advocacy organization on refugee crises worldwide. After six years at MPAA, five years as agriculture secretary and 18 in Congress, I plan to use every lever of power I know to compel governments to reduce the numbers of displaced people and make sure that those who remain displaced get the help they need.
