Coinciding with International Women’s Day, USGLC Advisers Ann Lewis and Susan Molinari penned an op-ed on women and security in Politico today. “Smart development is in America’s self-interest,” they write. “As Congress begins debate on the president’s budget request, they would do well to consider just how much funding the International Affairs budget matters to the United States’ security and future.” Lewis and Molinari assert that assisting women in particular provides a terrific return on investment for the United States’s aid dollars—women are more likely to put their money back into their communities, they say, citing Secretary Clinton’s comments: “Women and girls are one of the world’s greatest untapped resources. Remember the proverb, ‘Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime?’ Well, if you teach a woman to fish, she’ll feed the whole village.”
