In the wake of Saturday’s devastating earthquake in Chile, USAID is taking the lead in coordinating recovery efforts. The U.S. has so far provided search and rescue teams and satellite imagery to the damaged country. Secretary Clinton arrives today in Santiago, Chile, where she will discuss efforts to assist the country. Clinton said today she is bringing equipment, such as satellite phones, for the recovery effort, on her plane, and the U.S will begin providing a field hospital, communications support and water-purification systems to Chile. “Whatever they think they need, we will provide,” State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley said. The American and International chapters of the Red Cross have released several hundred thousand dollars to their Chilean affiliate for search and rescue and first aid.
