In President Obama’s State of the Union address, he highlighted the benefits of global engagement in strengthening America’s economy, protecting national security and demonstrating American values abroad.  He commended America’s leadership role in promoting development and diplomacy abroad, citing America’s immediate contribution to Haiti’s recovery and relief: “As we have for over 60 years, America takes these actions because our destiny is connected to those beyond our shores.  But we also do it because it is right. That’s why, as we meet here tonight, over 10,000 Americans are working with many nations to help the people of Haiti recover and rebuild. ” Still, he urged the country to increase our efforts abroad.

He set a goal of doubling exports over the next five years and introduced the creation of a National Export Initiative to equip farmers and small businesses with the tools they need to benefit from two million American jobs that increased exports will create.  He also stressed the need to hold countries accountable for their actions through enforcement of trade agreements.
