When he submits his FY11 Budget request to Congress next week, President Obama will also request supplemental funding for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition to an estimated $708 billion request for defense spending for FY2011, the Administration will likely request more than $30 billion for supplemental war funding. Congress in December enacted a $636 billion FY 2010 Defense spending bill, which included $128 billion in war funding — but additional money is needed this year to, among other things, fund the 30,000 troop increase for Afghanistan. Also on the Afghanistan front, Secretary Clinton will travel to the London conference on Afghanistan on January 28, where the U.S. is hoping our allies will offer additional funds and support for Afghanistan reconstruction.
