Development’s vital role in stabilizing failing and troubled states is being spotlighted as USAID and the State Department rush to help beleaguered Haiti. Rajiv Shah’s role in particular has been seen as indispensible. “Shah, the administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, has wowed the White House and State Department, with top officials in both places praising his steady leadership and command of the evolving operations in Port-au-Prince,” writes the Washington Post. President Obama pledged $100 million to Haiti, and Secretary Clinton is playing a high-profile role in relief efforts. Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough is on the ground in Haiti, helping to coordinate relief efforts.
