Shah, Vilsack and Holbrooke Talk Agriculture in Afghanistan
Newly sworn-in USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah hit the ground running Friday speaking at a press conference with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke about how investments in agriculture can have positive effects on security in Afghanistan. To develop a coordinated approach to building a successful agriculture strategy in Afghanistan, Secretary Vilsack commented, there “has to be a whole-of-government approach . . . We hope to look forward to working with experts not just in the USDA and USAID, but also land grant universities as well as some of our foreign partners to facilitate targeted investments in farming, increased productivity with new seed technologies, expansion of markets, building of the appropriate infrastructure.”
