2009 was a momentous year for USGLC activists throughout the country as they encouraged their Senators to pass the Kerry-Lugar amendment to add $4 billion back into the International Affairs Budget and were instrumental in obtaining a record number of signatures from Members of Congress on a letter to the President encouraging him to make a robust FY 2011 International Affairs Budget request.

2010 promises to be even more critical for all of our partners nationwide. From February 15th – 19th, Congress will be in recess for the Presidents’ Day holiday.  During this time, Members of Congress will be in their districts, and it is an important opportunity for activists to sit down with them and discuss their support for the International Affairs Budget.  If you are interested in setting up a meeting with your Member of Congress or Senator, please contact Field Director Mark Moskowitz at 202-730-4178.

Putting Smart Power to Work in South Carolina

The USGLC is delighted to co-host an exciting event in Columbia on January 28th with the University of South Carolina. At the event, the USGLC will announce the South Carolina State Advisory Committee, co-chaired by Ambassador David Wilkins and Governor Richard Riley.  The evening will feature a keynote address by Dr. Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations. The event will also include a panel discussion by leaders from the business, diplomatic and military communities to discuss the importance of the International Affairs Budget to South Carolina.

General Petraeus to Address USGLC in Florida

On February 3rd, the USGLC and the Tampa Bay Council of World Affairs and Commerce will host General David H. Petraeus, Commander of US Central Command, who will talk about the significance of development and diplomacy in U.S. global engagement.  As a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gen. Petraeus has a unique view on the need for civilian support on the ground.

This event comes on the heels of a lunch meeting in Miami last month with members of the Florida State Advisory Committee, which included a discussion with Dr. Reuben Brigety II, Assistant Deputy Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration (designate).  Dr. Brigety spoke on the future of Smart Power and a greater civilian capacity in American foreign policy.  After his remarks, members of the Advisory Committee began organizing to have meetings with the South Florida Congressional delegation in January and February.

If you are interested in attending any of our events or bringing events to your state, please contact Field Director Mark Moskowitz at 202-730-4178.
