With the House in recess for the remainder of the year, the Senate schedule remains very uncertain as Democrats try to muster the 60 votes necessary to move to a final vote on the health care bill.  In the meantime, the Senate is prepared to vote tomorrow on the FY 10 Defense bill, the last of the appropriations bills that haven’t been signed into law.  Looking ahead to next year and the FY 11 budget — and in the wake of Wednesday’s very close House vote to raise the federal debt ceiling — House Speaker Pelosi commented yesterday on the difficult budget and fiscal climate ahead for next year. She stated that “It is going to be a very hard year to do what we have to do to meet the needs of the American people and to maintain the fiscal soundness. And that requires some very tough decisions.”
