USGLC Honors Secretary Clinton Tonight
Tonight, the USGLC will honor Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her lifelong commitment to public service and her efforts to elevate America’s smart power tools of development and diplomacy. Over 1,000 individuals will attend the 2009 Tribute Dinner, making this the largest one in the USGLC’s history. This fact shows the great interest that exists in putting smart power to work and calling for a robust International Affairs Budget to meet the challenges the United States faces in today’s world.
As a First Lady, as a Senator, and now as the nation’s highest diplomat, Secretary Clinton has brought great intelligence and energy to the foreign assistance arena. She has always been a strong proponent of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and now as Secretary of State, she is delivering a distinct voice to America’s development efforts.
Secretary Clinton’s devotion and sincere interest in development and diplomacy have elevated these civilian-led tools to the forefront of U.S. foreign policy. She has made a “Smart Power” approach to international affairs a priority, utilizing all the tools the U.S. has at its disposal. She has spoken passionately about viewing foreign policy as a three-legged stool, with the U.S. bringing together development and diplomacy alongside a strong defense to achieve its objectives. She is working to implement the President’s commitment to double the foreign assistance budget by 2015.
NBC News Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Andrea Mitchell will serve as Master of Ceremonies at Monday night’s event, and the dinner will be co-chaired by James Bell, Corporate President and CFO of the Boeing Company and Richard Stearns, the President of World Vision.
