In June 2009, Rajiv Shah began serving in the Obama administration as Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics and Chief Scientist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Now USAID Administrator, Shah will become the country’s primary voice on international development and foreign assistance. At the USDA, Shah was a leader of the Administration’s global food security initiative, a role he may continue in his new position. He will also co-chair the State Department’s Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, and provide crucial guidance on development efforts throughout the government. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Shah held a number of senior positions at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, including director of Agricultural Development in the Global Development Program and deputy director of policy and finance for the Global Health Program. Shah has also worked for the Gore 2000 presidential campaign, the British Parliament, and the World Health Organization.
