Deputy Assistant Administrators for Africa
Lawrence Garber is the current USAID Deputy Assistant Administrators for Africa. Previously, Garber served as the Chief Executive Officer of the New Israel Fund (NIF) from 2004 until 2009. Prior to that position, Garber was the Mission-Director to the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Mission to the West Bank and Gaza in Tel Aviv. His prior position was as Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau of Policy and Program Coordination at the US Agency for International Development. In this capacity, he advised the USAID Administrator on substantive policy issues confronting the agency, managed the agency’s strategic planning process and represented the agency in inter-agency and inter-governmental forums. Prior to joining USAID in September 1993, Mr. Garber served as Senior Associate for Electoral Processes at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (1988-1992) and as Legal Director of the International Human Rights Law Group (1983-88). He also has acted as a consultant to the United Nations (1992-93) and to the Organization of American States (1989-90). As of 7/19/11
