The UGLSC is enthused that even more Senators and Representatives signed onto the Congressional Letter to the President over the weekend, bringing the total number of signers to date to 11 Senators and 23 Representatives. Among them are Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works; Rep. Michael Honda (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus; and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. But we still have a long way to go to break last year’s record 217 Congressional signers.

The House is not in session this week, but the Senate remains in town through Tuesday, as it plans to complete consideration of its ninth Appropriations bill, the $133.9 billion Military Construction-VA bill. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee meets Tuesday to mark up S.1524, a bill that seeks to strengthen USAID as part of broader efforts underway in Congress to modernize U.S. foreign assistance.
