USGLC Takes to the Field during August Recess

While most freshmen members of Congress were getting bombarded at healthcare Townhall meetings, the USGLC used the August recess to thank first-time House voters for their support for the International Affairs Budget. This highly successful “Thank the Freshmen” campaign reached a record number of freshmen members who supported the FY10 State, Foreign Operations bill earlier this summer.
Led by the USGLC’s growing State Advisory Committees, activists from around the country contacted members of Congress and their staffs to demonstrate strong constituent support for the International Affairs Budget. In dozens of states, USGLC activists organized in-district meetings to personally thank these members for their support. The feedback was powerful with reports that the Representatives’ appreciated the “thank you” and immediate recognition for their votes.
USGLC Builds Upon Impact ’08: First Stop, Florida
During last year’s exciting Impact ’08 campaign, the USGLC built a tremendous presence across Florida with two high-profile events in south Florida and an impressive Advisory Committee of over 100 members. Now the USGLC is expanding our existing network of activists across the state with a program planned in central Florida with General David Petraeus.
This year’s outreach began in the Melbourne, Orlando, Stuart, and Tampa areas with education meetings with members of Congress and their staffs including the offices of Representatives Alan Grayson (D-08), Kathy Castor (D-11), Suzanne Kosmas (D-24), Bill Posey (R-15), and Tom Rooney (R-16) (pictured below). Thank you to the participants in our meetings including representatives from the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, local American Red Cross, CARE, Florida Council of Churches, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, Florida Atlantic University, Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission, and others.
