Signaling her strong support for the role of development and the new Administration’s focus on food security and economic growth, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton departed last night for an 11-day trip to seven African countries this week.  Secretary Clinton’s visit follows up on President Obama’s to Ghana earlier in July.   She will visit Kenya, South Africa, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Liberia and Cape Verde.

The Secretary’s first stop begins today in Kenya, where she will address the U.S.-Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Forum on economic development and trade.  In Kenya and Nigeria, she will discuss the importance of good governance, and energy production will be a part of her time in Nigeria and Angola.

In South Africa, Clinton will meet with President Zuma to discuss topics including HIV/AIDS, as U.S. assistance has played a central role in the helping South Africa stem the tide of this disease.  She will focus on the importance of development in Liberia and Cape VerdeCape Verde is recognized as a country that has used development assistance wisely, especially funds from its Millennium Challenge Account grant.

Her time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo will center on the issue of sexual- and gender-based violence.  She will visit Goma in the eastern part of the country to hear personally from victims of this horrific practice.

This eleven day trip will be the longest in Secretary Clinton’s tenure, and this again shows the importance of U.S. support for Africa and its development.  Look to the USGLC to provide updates throughout Secretary Clinton’s travels over the next two weeks.
